Chris Heerschap's Freehub Measuring Tool allows you to quickly and accurately identify Shimano HG 10 and 11 speed freehub bodies, as well as SRAM XD and XDR drivers.
Place the tool on the freehub making sure the bottom of the tool sits flush with the bottom lip of the freehub, and then line up the edge with the end of the freehub. The stepped end of the tool that lines up with the end of the freehub indicates the length of the freehub.
Shimano HG freehubs will be indicated as either 10 or 11 speed, although 10 speed will fit 8, 9, and 10 speed, as well as 11 speed MTB cassettes and some large road 11 speed cassettes (such as the 11-34 11 speed Ultegra or 105). The longer 11 speed road is 1.85 mm longer and mounts 11 and 12 speed Shimano road cassettes. For more info, check out Dave Rome's article on Cycling Tips.
