Silca's Strip Chip eliminates the need to use harsh and often toxic cleaners or degreasers prior to waxing a brand new chain. In fact, Strip Chips would actually be food safe and theoretically edible if it wasn't for the friction-reducing tungsten disulfide additive (in saying that, do not attempt to eat your strip chips, even if they do look like chocolate).
A common misconception is that the factory chain grease applied by Shimano, SRAM, KMC etc, is an excellent lubricant. In reality, factory greases do not provide lasting lubrication and are only designed to prevent the chain from rusting in storage. To make things worse, due to their water resistant properties, factory greases also reject chain waxes. Previously, this would often lead to a time and labor intensive process to remove every microscopic particle of factory chain grease.
However, with Strip Chip, you no longer need to, as the revolutionary additives bind with and change the chemical composition of the factory grease to be more like a lubrication chain wax, allowing the two to mix and the lubricating wax to penetrate deep into the inner workings of chain pins and rollers! This isn't just some marketing pseudo-science, Silca actually collaborated with Purdue University for the development of Strip Chip, with the chemistry based on the concept of Oleogelation which is currently being explored for manipulating oily fats in foods.
Strip Chip is sold in a convenient chocolate bar-like form, with each bar containing six pieces (12 grams each).
Please note that strip chips are only designed for use with brand new chains. Adding a strip chip to a wax pot with a chain that isn't coated in factory grease will cause the strip chip to chemically react with your choice of lubricating wax instead, making it harder, potentially so hard that it actually affects shifting performance. As long as you only use Strip Chips with brand new chains, you easily get 40-50 waxings out of a 500 g bag of wax. Silca also recommend a maximum of 6 strip chips per 500 g of wax, which means you can strip 6 brand new chains (although not at once) before it's time to replace your wax.
Any degreasing to a previously waxed chain should only requiring boiling hot water.
Directions for use:
1. Drop a single Strip Chip square into your choice of hot wax and heat to 125 °C.
2. Once heated, lower your chain into the wax and agitate for 30 seconds.
3. Soak your chain for 10 minutes, before lightly agitating again.
4. Set the pot's temperature back to 75 °C
5. Once the wax has reached 75 °C, remove your chain and hang to dry.
6. Cool and reuse the same pot of wax for future waxing.
Yes it's really that simple!
